Joseph Smith did not introduce such variety into the translation of the Book of Mormon. In the Book of Mormon, two of the profound uses of the phrase, “And now it came to pass,” are in chapters 11 and 19 of 3rd Nephi. The phrase is also, of course, frequently found in the King James Version of the Bible, which is no doubt why Joseph Smith used it in the BoM; it just sounds so darned biblical. The trouble is that he liked it so much that he got carried away with it.
